The latest steps along that path brought me to USU, where I collaborated with the talented librarians Sandra Weingart, Kacy Lundstrom, and Wendy Holliday in teaching freshman writing as a master's student. Rather than move on to a PhD in English, I stuck around in Logan after graduating, and in 2012 Jennifer Duncan hired me as an electronic-resources assistant at USU. I went to library school at the University of North Texas (online) and was fortunate to land a faculty job at the Merrill-Cazier Library right after graduating. I stayed long enough to receive tenure and began working at EBSCO Information Services in the summer of 2022, where I work with a fantastic team to help libraries implement the open-source library services platform FOLIO.</blockquote></div><div><i>What do you hope to accomplish as President?</i></div><div><blockquote>Broadly, my goal is to harness the enthusiasm of library-minded people throughout the valley to make life better for all of them. CVLA has a history of providing its members valuable opportunities for collaborative work, professional development, and personal networking. I hope to hold that torch high, promoting the value that the organization offers and encouraging its members to keep collaborating just beyond the bounds of their different employers and library types.</blockquote></div><div><i>Who are your favorite authors? What are your favorite genres?</i></div><div><blockquote>I'm not as prolific a reader as many library folks. I have long been a fan of low fantasy, where magic intrudes on the real world (Susan Cooper's "The Dark Is Rising" series and C. S. Lewis's "The Chronicles of Narnia" are longtime favorites). More recent discoveries include the "Jackaby" series by William Ritter, Stuart Tarton's The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, and Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book, I think all of which my wife found for me in one way or another. Brandon Sanderson's "Mistborn" series and "Elantris" books are brilliant too.</blockquote></div><div><i>What do you like to do for fun?</i></div><div><blockquote>I enjoy baking (including learning the science of sourdough), visiting family, playing volleyball with friends, noodling on the piano (or listening to my wife play), taking backpacking trips with more lounging in a hammock than trekking for miles and miles, and watching either high-quality kids' movies or time-twisting sci-fi.</blockquote></div></div>Cache Valley Library Associationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05420813537720889061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5041722532909771157.post-92082833767283973382024-01-29T15:21:00.001-07:002024-02-20T11:52:31.229-07:002024 Library Hero Award<div style="text-align: center;">Congratulations to</div><b><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-size: medium;">Joseph Anderson</span></b></div></b><div style="text-align: center;">who was named our 2024 Library Hero!</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB-sTd1kokUacKpesQoW49bv_dP6WVdE3UEz_oJ30JteudlM03DFMkX8hz81Z9AX27tKEj8eCNEKothVNqNaIp6FP8iiWVg6N_T1P1XLPWnpdjVUC5_vMhDxWZppivpqLw-h0mYHgCIyrqcZZZGr9D9sThd532LBRjghrNZ1Hh-6dPKW5PyzUywdFdTYE/s1145/Joseph%20Anderson%202023%20b+w%20crop%20light%20square.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1145" data-original-width="1145" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB-sTd1kokUacKpesQoW49bv_dP6WVdE3UEz_oJ30JteudlM03DFMkX8hz81Z9AX27tKEj8eCNEKothVNqNaIp6FP8iiWVg6N_T1P1XLPWnpdjVUC5_vMhDxWZppivpqLw-h0mYHgCIyrqcZZZGr9D9sThd532LBRjghrNZ1Hh-6dPKW5PyzUywdFdTYE/w200-h200/Joseph%20Anderson%202023%20b+w%20crop%20light%20square.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>NOMINATION: <br />"I would like to nominate Joseph Anderson as a library hero. Joseph has loved and worked in libraries for years. As assistant director and non-fiction librarian at the Logan Library, he advocates for collection diversity and freedom to read, making sure that his collection has items to fill the needs of all members of the community. He is also a strong advocate for patron privacy. Joseph helps facilitate Friends of the Library and has also helped form partnerships with community entities such as Helicon West. Joseph has been involved in CVLA from the beginning. He currently serves as web master keeping the community informed. He also keeps us on track and makes sure we adhere to the by-laws. Joseph has combined his love of libraries with his inclination as a history buff. For his MSLS, he wrote a research paper on the history of past and present attempts to form a county-wide library system in Cache County. He also recently gave a presentation for the Cache Valley Historical Society on the history of the Logan Library. All in all, Joseph works to help libraries be the best they can. Isn’t that a library hero?"<br />(nominated by Lauri Hancey)<div><br /></div><div>The award was presented to Joseph on Tue, Jan 23 at our membership meeting at the USU Merrill-Cazier Library.</div>Cache Valley Library Associationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05420813537720889061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5041722532909771157.post-54501147230027658552024-01-26T11:09:00.007-07:002024-01-26T11:10:58.532-07:002024 Annual Meeting<p><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">At our annual meeting on Tue, Jan 23 at the USU Merrill-Cazier Library, we introduced our 2024 Executive Committee, thanked our outgoing 2023 Executive Committee, announced our 2024 Library Hero Award recipient, and shared our personal histories with libraries. Please accept our apologies!</p>Congratulations to<br /><b><span style="font-size: medium;">Puanani Mateaki</span></b> & <b><span style="font-size: medium;">Mady Meyers</span></b><br />who were named our 2022 Library Heroes! <div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>NOMINATION: </div><div>"One night in [2010], Puanani Mateaki, a librarian new to Cache Valley, suggested to me that we create a library association in our area. I created a Facebook group and she drew up a list of local librarians. In January, 2012, she invited them to two meetings at her library to discuss the idea with others. That idea soon blossomed into our Cache Valley Library Association, an organization that has increased the visibility of our libraries and supported many library workers over the last ten years. It's time we honor her for the wonderful spark of an idea (and how fitting to do it exactly ten years on from the first meetings)!"</div><div>(nominated by Joseph N. Anderson)</div><div><br /></div><div>NOMINATION:</div><div>"Mady Meyers is a children's librarian. She shares her love for books with all the children around her. The kids love her and get so excited to see her. She is great at kneeling down to get on their level to talk with them. She truly listens and cares about them. She is always happy and smiling! She brings to work a positive countenance with her. She is very talented with always coming up with creative ideas for the kids to enjoy and participate in. We didn’t have a public library in the small town where I attended elementary school, but I remember visiting the bookmobile on the way home from school as often as it came, and I was a regular visitor at my local library branch when my family moved to West Valley City. One of my favorite memories was the day I realized the librarians knew who I was… they had my holds ready for me before I handed them my library card. When my family moved to Cache Valley I got a part time job at the Logan Library, thinking it would be a fun way to earn a little bit of spending money while I went to college. 31 years later, I’m still there, and have recently earned my Master’s degree in Library Science.</blockquote><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><i>Who are your favorite authors and genres?</i></div><blockquote>Anne McCaffrey is the one who comes to mind first, but there are so many others. In no particular order, some others that I love are Lloyd Alexander, L M Montgomery, J R R Tolkien, Patricia Wrede, Diana Wynne Jones, J K Rowling, Marissa Meyer, Stephenie Meyer, Robin McKinley, Sarah Eden, Elsie Lee, Eoin Colfer, C S Lewis, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Bill Peet, Gary Larson, Bill Waterson, E D Baker, Tamora Pierce, Gail Carson Levine, Elizabeth Peters, Dorothy Gilman, Heron Carvic, L Frank Baum, Rick Riordan, … and the list could go on and on. As you can probably tell from this list of authors, my favorite genres are fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, historical fiction, and middle grade fiction. I’m really not fond of most non-fiction, but I do enjoy a good narrative biography.</blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><i>What do you hope to accomplish as President?</i></div><blockquote>As president of the Cache Valley Library Association for 2023, my main goal is to continue the revitalization effort that the 2022 executive committee started, recovering from the slump that the 2020 pandemic threw us into. I hope to keep the activities fresh and on schedule to encourage regular participation from everyone in Cache Valley who works at or loves libraries.</blockquote>Cache Valley Library Associationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05420813537720889061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5041722532909771157.post-68751064309595210242023-06-02T17:29:00.001-06:002023-07-13T16:05:05.685-06:00Bikes to Books 2023<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMKjC5CUs11Vinyl57B0cOOntSEgf5orXiLQJvgCX6ie2-AWp03KUWFL8zGkt4Xur9wFkthBnfvgA8QiP0sKvjUrYXjBv0ShnB2Ro788sutRYfM0K54fI6GICUmaglFBiCiUE53uHCNy4MCAIvRZCLt3swrTDca9E6Pq0aWbjk6TlH7JQtcnr_LQ1X/s1301/BikesToBooks.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="911" data-original-width="1301" height="224" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMKjC5CUs11Vinyl57B0cOOntSEgf5orXiLQJvgCX6ie2-AWp03KUWFL8zGkt4Xur9wFkthBnfvgA8QiP0sKvjUrYXjBv0ShnB2Ro788sutRYfM0K54fI6GICUmaglFBiCiUE53uHCNy4MCAIvRZCLt3swrTDca9E6Pq0aWbjk6TlH7JQtcnr_LQ1X/s320/BikesToBooks.png" width="320" /></a></div></div><div>You're invited to join our annual bike ride! In that time she has helped thousands of children develop a love for reading. It is clear that the children love Miss Karen, and anyone who subs for her can tell the exact moment a child notices that the adult at the desk is NOT Miss Karen: there is immediate alarm, sometimes a look of mistrust, but always a slight disappointment that the beating heart of the Smithfield Library is absent. If ever you have the chance to ride behind Miss Karen at the Smithfield Health Days Parade, the cheering and applause will make you feel like you are in the presence of an A-list celebrity. The children of Smithfield will actually ignore the thrown parade candy for the chance to wave and call out, “It’s Miss Karen!” With the sudden retirement of the former director, Karen became the interim director literally overnight, and has taken on the enormous task of fostering a sense of community space and welcome that has been missing from the Smithfield Library. Her former and current employees have this to say about her:</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Her goal has been to improve the library’s relationship with the citizens.</li><li>She says patrons come first.</li><li>She wants everyone to feel welcome.</li><li>She wants programming for all ages.</li><li>She has improved staff communication and understanding of what is most important.</li><li>She has clearly defined staff roles.</li><li>She is communicating with city and the library board so they know what is happening at the library.</li><li>She’s always friendly and uplifting even when she has to deliver a hard truth.</li><li>She wants this library to be a resource to our community for more than just books and other media.</li></ul></div><div>"In other words, Karen has a love for her patrons, the ability to work with and inspire others, and</div><div>the vision of a library that is a place for all. Karen became the director of Logan City Library in the middle of the long debate on whether or not Logan City needed a new library. The discussion had gone on for years, but it seemed that it just might happen under the new Mayor, Holly Daines. Karen spent hours working on what needed to happen to have the new library become a reality. Architects were hired, the library designs were being created. The one big problem was where do we build the library. Karen had many decisions to help make. The public was very vocal about what should happen. Things were coming together when the pandemic hit the world. City offices were closed, and the library was one of them. She had employees to think about along with the public.</div><div><br /></div><div>"How do you keep a city library functioning when you have to close due to a pandemic. The library</div><div>immediately started this service for all patrons during the pandemic. They even started mailing books to</div><div>partons. have been a proud member of the library profession for 27 years,
working at academic and public libraries, providing reference, running
public programs, and buying materials. It has always made me happy that
when I tell people I am a librarian, they often smile and respond by
telling me about fond memories of their childhood library or how much
they love reading books. However, more recently, people have been
responding by asking if I have heard about the spread of legislation and
activism geared toward attacking librarians and their collection
development decisions.</p><div class="tnt-ads-container text-center"><div class="tnt-ads dfp-smart-ad" id="tnt-smart-ad-1"></div></div></div><div class="subscriber-only"><p> Sadly,
our country is growing ever more polarized, and libraries are
increasingly facing challenges to the materials in their collections,
with the American Library Association (ALA) documenting 729 challenges
last year alone. This is so perplexing to me as an information
professional who understands the time and consideration that librarians
put into developing their collections for the wide variety of readers
and researchers they support, generally relying on well-defined
collection development policies.</p></div><div class="subscriber-only"><p> There
is a popular quotation among librarians: “A truly great library has
something to offend everyone.” I would also like to evoke James LaRue,
the former director of the ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom: “A really
good library has something to support everyone” — whether that is the
Christian homeschooler who needs access to curricular materials or the
crafter looking for new ideas or the transgender teen who should be able
to see themselves represented in the collection.</p><p>This year marks the fortieth
anniversary of the establishment of Banned Books Week (Sept. 18-24),
which celebrates the freedom to read. Each September, librarians,
booksellers, publishers, journalists, and teachers mark this week by
emphasizing the importance of the free flow of information that allows
our society to thrive. In fact, books help our citizens engage deeply
with complex topics. Banned Books Week challenges the belief that the
censorship of ideas protects people from the complexities they encounter
in the world around them. The whole notion of promoting the freedom of
speech and ideas so that we can all individually make our own judgments
is a pillar of this country’s founding. To echo another commonly
expressed saying among librarians, those who ban books have generally
not landed on the right side of history. During Banned Books Week,
please support your librarians and your libraries and know that we are
supporting you too.</p><div class="tnt-ads-container text-center"><div class="tnt-ads dfp-smart-ad" id="tnt-smart-ad-2"></div></div><div class="subscriber-only"><p> Jennifer Duncan </p></div><div class="subscriber-only"><p>President, Cache Valley Library Association</p></div><p> </p></div><p></p>Cache Valley Library Associationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05420813537720889061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5041722532909771157.post-3830535561216847002022-09-19T16:16:00.002-06:002022-09-19T16:32:29.827-06:00Banned Books Week Virtual Event<p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjywDfbG7eg_XNDGB4rA0_hVgF5qhiwbnT6_5jPyJlW1jUmNRbIFrC3-sSY6-2oar46HvtSXJBhHmlEzTaCByYfqj_jnDpA1dmXl8Frx31mrAs8UPsKZ-Gik7xaFVaqhVBCB2zbY2Gin2WV2NftUhnvHdXhLlTs-SJ84xLiV9mkXW3eDgx78krCNaTi/s911/Banned%20Books%20and%20You%20Poster%201.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="911" data-original-width="684" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjywDfbG7eg_XNDGB4rA0_hVgF5qhiwbnT6_5jPyJlW1jUmNRbIFrC3-sSY6-2oar46HvtSXJBhHmlEzTaCByYfqj_jnDpA1dmXl8Frx31mrAs8UPsKZ-Gik7xaFVaqhVBCB2zbY2Gin2WV2NftUhnvHdXhLlTs-SJ84xLiV9mkXW3eDgx78krCNaTi/s320/Banned%20Books%20and%20You%20Poster%201.jpg" width="240" /></a>We're excited to be partnering with the Logan Library on a virtual event for Banned Books Week!</p><p>Katie Wegner, Co-Chair of the Utah Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee, will give a talk titled </p><p><i>Banned Books & You: Protecting the Freedom to Read</i> </p><p>on <b>Thursday, September 22 at 7:00 PM</b>. </p><p>To receive a link to this free event, you must first register at
