I don’t remember a time when I didn’t love books and reading and libraries. We didn’t have a public library in the small town where I attended elementary school, but I remember visiting the bookmobile on the way home from school as often as it came, and I was a regular visitor at my local library branch when my family moved to West Valley City. One of my favorite memories was the day I realized the librarians knew who I was… they had my holds ready for me before I handed them my library card. When my family moved to Cache Valley I got a part time job at the Logan Library, thinking it would be a fun way to earn a little bit of spending money while I went to college. 31 years later, I’m still there, and have recently earned my Master’s degree in Library Science.
Anne McCaffrey is the one who comes to mind first, but there are so many others. In no particular order, some others that I love are Lloyd Alexander, L M Montgomery, J R R Tolkien, Patricia Wrede, Diana Wynne Jones, J K Rowling, Marissa Meyer, Stephenie Meyer, Robin McKinley, Sarah Eden, Elsie Lee, Eoin Colfer, C S Lewis, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Bill Peet, Gary Larson, Bill Waterson, E D Baker, Tamora Pierce, Gail Carson Levine, Elizabeth Peters, Dorothy Gilman, Heron Carvic, L Frank Baum, Rick Riordan, … and the list could go on and on. As you can probably tell from this list of authors, my favorite genres are fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, historical fiction, and middle grade fiction. I’m really not fond of most non-fiction, but I do enjoy a good narrative biography.
As president of the Cache Valley Library Association for 2023, my main goal is to continue the revitalization effort that the 2022 executive committee started, recovering from the slump that the 2020 pandemic threw us into. I hope to keep the activities fresh and on schedule to encourage regular participation from everyone in Cache Valley who works at or loves libraries.
