Proposed Bylaws Changes 2021

The Executive Committee proposes to amend the bylaws. In accordance with Article 9 of the current bylaws*, the proposed amendment has been posted to our Facebook page more than 45 days ahead of our next business meeting the week of November 15. Please review these changes and be prepared to vote on it at the meeting. Click on the images to read the proposed changes

A summary of the changes are:
○ Update wording of Article 5: Officers and Their Duties
○ Adding a duties description to the Members at Large bullet point.
○ Updated wording of the nomination of Members at Large and moving that bullet point into Article 7: Nominations and Elections.
○ Replacing the phrase “Business Meeting” with “meetings and/or activities” throughout the bylaws.
○ Removing “website” from the duties of the Webmaster. Leaving it open to include any and all online presence(s).
○ Adding the phrase “of the Executive Committee” to the end of the Webmaster duties to better define the scope of duties.

* "Amendments to these bylaws may be proposed any time during the year. Amendments may be proposed during a business meeting or via email to a member of the Executive Committee. In either case, the Executive Committee will post upcoming amendments for consideration on the CVLA website a minimum of 45 days before being voted on in a business meeting. To pass an amendment requires 2/3 “yes” vote by members present at the business meeting targeted to vote on the amendment; members unable to attend that meeting may cast a vote in absentia by emailing it to the CVLA secretary no later than one day prior to that business meeting."

Author Visit!

We're excited to present "Evening with An Author" featuring Tiffany Rosenhan! This event will be on
Tuesday, September 14 at 7:00 PM in the Logan High School Auditorium at 162 W 100 S (Logan, UT). CVLA has hosted many author events since its founding in 2012, including Jan Brett, Jennifer Nielsen, Nathan Hale, and Jan Pinborough. This event is free and open to the public.

Tiffany Rosenhan, granddaughter of Oscar-winning screen writer Mary Astor (The Maltese Falcon), lives in Millcreek, Utah with her husband, who works as a critical care physician, and four young daughters. Girl From Nowhere (released July 2020) is her debut novel about which Booklist says “Heartpounding international action fuels this novel at an unrelenting pace... Thoroughly different from most YA offerings. . . (a) twisting, turning thriller from beginning to end.”

Tiffany Rosenhan will be spending most of the day at Logan High School working with students before her evening presentation.

March Email Meeting

Got Email?
In lieu of a single in person or digital meeting, we thought we'd try something a little different this month and host an email meeting. At the end of the email sent to the membership on March 16 is a short six question survey asking about your ideas for CVLA and how things are going at your libraries. None of the questions are required to submit the form, so if there's a question or two you don't have anything you want to talk about, you can skip it.

The survey will be open for submissions until Sunday March 21, after which we'll aggregate the responses and send those out for everyone to comment on. This will be a great opportunity for us to share our expertise and experiences with each other!

The results will be sent out March 26th, and while anyone is welcome to respond anytime that weekend, the "official meeting" day will be Tuesday March 30. We hope this format is flexible enough that everyone who wants to can participate, and we hope to hear from you soon!

Small and Rural Libraries Encouraged to Apply for Libraries Transforming Communities Grant

The ALA is now accepting applications for their Libraries Transforming Communities grant program for small and rural libraries. Applications are open until March 4, and ALA is hoping to see more applications from the West Coast. The grant has a very simple application and very minimal reporting requirements, and public, academic, and school libraries are all eligible to apply.

To apply, a library must either serve a population of 25,000 or less (small) or be more than 5 miles from an urbanized area of 25,000 or more (rural).

If a library is awarded the grant, a staff member (or multiple) takes part in an online course designed for small and rural libraries on holding a community conversation, and that the library agrees to host one community conversation, which can be virtual, using the model. The grant provides access to the training and $3000 to spend on something related to the conversation -- and that could be ANYTHING, from staff time to books to a Zoom license to hotspots to circulate to a traveling makerspace kit... literally anything. This is a great opportunity to fund a purchase and fill community needs.

Hopefully we'll have some Cache Valley libraries take part in this great program!

Business Meeting and Kahoot Activity

Come join us for our a general meeting introducing and confirming the 2021 Executive Board, then having a Kahoot competition afterwards (if you don't know what that is, just know, it's fun). Because the meeting will be hosted via Zoom, you are welcome to include anyone in your household.

If you aren't on our email list and would like the Zoom link and passcode, send an email to cachelibraries@gmail.com, and we can get the information to you.

Hope to see you Wednesday!
