Sad Occasion for Cache Valley Libraries

Dear Cache / Rich Bookmobile supporters,

We're very sorry that despite writing letters, showing up to council meetings, and drumming up support, we weren't successful in stopping Cache County from cutting the budget for your library [see this post about the end of bookmobile services in just a few weeks: http://bit.ly/2pUpww5]. We continue to feel that decision by the executive and council was short-sighted and that it will negatively impact the education, literacy, and cultural lives of valley residents, especially those with lower incomes and those without a town library nearby.

We encourage everyone to use your libraries on a regular basis and talk to your friends and neighbors about what they mean to you. Make support for libraries a part of your social and political conversations. Ask candidates for office whether they support funding libraries and then take their answers into consideration when voting. Let's not allow a shameful event like this to happen again in Cache Valley.

Sincerely,
Save the Cache/Rich Bookmobile

Urgent: Library Advocacy Needed

Dear CVLA and community members,

As reported on Cache Valley Daily on Sep. 14, Cache County Executive Craig Buttars is currently considering de-funding the Cache / Rich Bookmobile and Cache County Library. We are very concerned about the impact of such a move on our communities, and also the employees of these essential organizations.

Last week, our CVLA Executive Committee created an advocacy committee to explore ways we might promote our libraries, especially the bookmobile and county library at this time. You'll hear more from the committee in the near future. If you are interested in assisting in this effort, even if only for a short time, please contact me ASAP at joseph.anderson@loganutah.org.

In the meantime, if you feel so inclined, please respectfully express your opinion on this issue to Executive Buttars at (435) 755-1850 or craig.buttars@cachecounty.org before he presents his preliminary budget to the council during their Oct. 11 meeting. You can also like the new Save the Cache/Rich Bookmobile Facebook page for updates and to show your support.

We know how important libraries are in the lives of our community members. We know how important the bookmobile is, especially to our rural communities. We know the amazing rate of return on investment in libraries. We're not giving up on our communities, their libraries, and their employees!

All the best,
Joseph N. Anderson

July 24 Events

We have two great events happening July 24th that we wanted everyone to know about. Whether you are a current CVLA Member or librarian working in Cache Valley or just a library-fan, we invite you to come and join in the festivities with us.

First, we will be participating in the Logan Pioneer Day Parade. Shawn Bliss, the Cache/Rich Bookmobile librarian will be driving his bookmobile in the parade and JaDene Denniston will be offering her convertible. There will be opportunities to ride or walk, as you need. We will meet at 10:30 along 100 W in Logan and make signs that represent our libraries or what we love most about libraries. Going along with the Summer Reading Program theme, we invite all participants to show up in superhero costumes or shirts, but it isn't required. We will have sign making equipment ready and water bottles for the participants. The parade will begin at noon and end at 1:30 at Willow Park. Please be sure to wear suncreen and bring a hat, if you need it. The map of the parade route is available here: http://www.loganutah.org/PR/Dept/images/Pioneer_Day/2015PioneerDayParadeInformation.pdf.

Second, we will be celebrating with Mendon City as they break ground for their brand new library/city office building. The groundbreaking starts at 7 pm at the Mendon Town Square. CVLA will have a brief meeting and some treats beforehand - at 6 pm at the pavilion on the square. The meeting agenda and minutes needing approval are attached for your reading pleasure. Please note that there will be showings of the "Wellsville Kid" at 5:30 and 7:45 that day, as well as the next day at 6, 7, and 8 o'clock. The Wellsville Kid is a very entertaining movie created by the residents of Mendon in 1972. (You can read about it in the Standard Examiner here: http://www.standard.net/Movies-TV/2015/07/16/The-Wellsville-Kid-rides-again-in-Mendon.html) The movie has been remastered and will be shown as a fundraiser for library. Tickets are $5/adults and $3/kids ages 12 and under or $7/adults and $5/kids at the door. Call 435-764-6610 or email wellsvillekid@gmail.com to pre-order.

We hope to see you there!

Thanks,
Liz
